Mini’s Diary and Other Stories is an evocative collection of slice-of-life narratives that explore a variety of themes—from the innocent world of children and teens to the struggles of parents, the elderly, and the overlooked. This poignant and charming depiction of life’s dualities includes both happy and unhappy families, lovable and grumpy characters, and the young and the old. Each story captures lives in quiet transition—some painful, some liberating, all achingly real.

🌸 The story ‘Mini’s Diary’ offers a glimpse into the mind of an obese young lady.

👴 ‘Lonely in the Crowd’ reflects on the silent plight of the elderly.

🏠 In ‘The Orphaned House’, an ancestral home—imagined as a sentient being—narrates its own abandonment.

🌊 ‘A Sentinel on Land’s End’ portrays the romantic yet tragic solitude of a lighthouse keeper.

🌾 In ‘How Green Was My Village’, the slow erosion of a rural community mirrors the sense of displacement felt by its residents.

Rooted in Indian life yet echoing universal truths, Beena Sugathan invites readers to pause, reflect, and rediscover the extraordinary in ordinary, day-to-day life. With finely crafted prose, a keen eye for life’s subtle ironies, and a sensitivity to emotional nuance, this collection of seventeen stories will compel you to listen not only to what is said but also to the silences in between.

Beena Sugathan, originally from North Paravur, Kerala, holds a postgraduate degree in English Literature. Married to Dr K.S. Sugathan, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, she spent several years in Gandhinagar in Gujarat and New Delhi. She retired as Head of the English Department at Loreto Convent, Delhi.

Ms Sugathan is the author of several academic books, including The Grammar Tree published by Oxford University Press. Empanelled as a member of the textbook development team of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), she co-authored the Class VII English textbook in 2006 and the Class VIII textbook in 2007.

Unto Eternity and Other Stories, her debut collection, offers a slice of urban and rural life—with all its ups and downs, simplicity and complexity—while exploring the universal tapestry of human emotions. The thought-provoking themes resonate deeply with familiar life experiences.

Mini’s Diary and Other Stories, her second collection, holds a mirror to society in all its myriad colours. These stories portray a community of characters from diverse backgrounds, each with unique experiences, yet touching each other’s lives.
